Johnson fitness is one of the "big boys" of the fitness equipment world. After ICON and Nautilus, they're probably the largest fitness equipment manufacturer right now and have been in the business since 1975.
They manufacture several popular fitness brands like Livestrong, Horizon , Merit, Matrix, AFG, Tempo and Vision.
Most manufacturing is based in Asia - in Taiwan with two additional plants in Shanghai, China, which allows them to keep costs down. Johnson is headquartered in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin
Each brand Johnson makes has it's own strengths. For example, Matrix is a commercial health club brand. Merit is a budget-based brand.
Probably the two most popular Johnson treadmill brands for the home are Livestrong and Horizon.
Livestrong is the result of a partnership with cyclist Lance Armstrong. And part of the proceeds from these treadmills go to support Lance Armstrong's foundation to help fight cancer.
The treadmills themselves are one of the more exciting brands to come along in a while. They are stable, well-built mid-priced units ($799-$1299) that are slightly underpriced compared to the competition.
Horizon treadmills have been around for longer however new updated models come out usually every year or so.
Horizon treadmills are mainly starter treadmills ($500 - $1000)with all the basics you need - at very low prices. Horizon treadmills mainly compete with other starter brands like Proform.
Horizon also produces one of the only compact treadmills on the market - the Horizon Evolve which is a lighter weight, very compact model you can use in small areas or take with you on the road.
Another Johnson treadmill brand is Merit - which are very basic, economy treadmills (Under $600). We wouldn't necessarily recommend them as they don't give you much - but the prices are some of the lowest you'll find.
Which Johnson Brand is Best?
This really depends on your personal needs (for example, are you on a tight budget? Do you need a strong treadmill for running? etc.)
However if we had to choose, our favorite is Livestrong for both value and construction quality. These treadmill are built well with a great warranty and - compared to other brands at this price point - slightly underpriced for what you get.
Matrix and Vision - while more expensive - have rated well also in the past. So it's really up to you.
