Strengths:

1) Burn Up To 5X More Calories with up to 40% Incline

The X5i gives you up to 40% inclines.  (Most treadmills offer inclines of 10-15%).

Incline walking forces your muscles through a greater range of motion and you can burn 3X more calories (walking on a 25% incline)  and 5X more calories (walking on a 40% incline) as compared to walking on a flat incline.  This means faster results and a more toned body in less time.

If you don't have a lot of time to workout but still want to get the most from your exercise sessions, the incline trainer is a great way to fast-track your progress.

2) 3% Decline

You get up to 3% decline on the this trainer - which helps you work different muscles and get a better overall workout.

You don't usually find decline on a treadmill - except for some $5000 rehabilitation units so it's very cool to find here.

3) iFit LIVE Compatible

With iFit LIVE you can connect your treadmill to the wireless internet in your home and run trails all over the world using Googlemaps, track your workout stats over time and download new workouts to your machine - including ones from Jillian Michaels from 'The Biggest Loser'.

4) Longer 55" Belt

One of the common complaints with past incline trainers is that their belts were very short (i.e. 50"). With the longer 55" belt, the X5 gives you more room to move. If you're not overly tall you can also probably run on this machine quite comfortably.

5) Reflex Deck Cushioning Reduces Impact By Nearly 42%

Reflex deck cushioning is Nordic track's best cushioning system - very soft and easy on the joints.

It reduces impact by nearly 42% compared to running on asphalt. So if you're a runner, prone to shin splints or just concerned about protecting your joints, this is a great cushioning system to have.

6) iPod Dock With Speakers

Plug in your iPod or Mp3 player and listen to your favorite tunes while you workout - another feature that can make your workouts more enjoyable.

7) Random Trail Generator

The Random Trail Generator takes the 9 built-in calorie burning workouts and rearranges them. This keeps things fresh and challenging since you never know what you're going to get.

Weaknesses:

If you don't have wireless Internet in your home, you won't be able to get full use out of the iFit LIVE. Be aware that the iFit LIVE module is sold separately. If you want an iFit LIVE built-in (no separate module cost), you may want to upgrade to the X7 incline trainer.

Overall Conclusion:  Recommended

The NordicTrack X5i incline trainer is a super-upgrade on your typical treadmill. With up to 40% inclines, you can burn 5X the calories (vs walking on a flat plane). So if you haven't got the results you've wanted in the past, this may be a good option for you.

And with a 3% decline you have the added advantage of working different muscles and changing up your workout. The longer belt is a welcome addition too as it gives you more room to move.

Along with the iPod port, iFit LIVE, console speakers and Random Trail generator, you can listen to your favorite tunes and never get bored. Overall, a great upgrade to the older incline trainer models.
